51 Things to Blog About

The “Blogging When” is nearly a mute point without the “Blogging What.”

I took many creative writing classes in college. At least one class per semester would be devoted strictly to the “writer’s block” phenomenon that is all too common. We have all been there before, are here too often now and will likely be there at some point in the future. It’s a frustrating place to find yourself when all you want to do is get your post in and create value for someone else. What it comes down to is, if you were reading your Blog, what would you want to read? What would you find useful? How could someone spin current content to make it relevant? Or what content could you create to make relevant?

Before you scream and shout (or worse yet) throw away your “Blogging Days,” here are 51 Things to Blog About. Just try it, you might be pleasantly surprised! (Keep in mind that even though I have broken these up into the “Professional” and “Personal” Blogs, many of them could toggle and be used for both. Really – the sky is the limit!)

Blog Post Frequency and Strategy

How frequent do you post to your Blog? Do you have a strategy or method for how your Blog Posts go up and what they are about?

When it comes to Blogging,
I would say that 9 times out of 10, something is better than nothing. And even if that “something” doesn’t have the best rhyme or reason, at least it’s out there. But after awhile, I believe that our intentions must become more methodical, planned and somehow based around a strategy if for no other reason than simple sanity! I started to find that my posts were becoming too “random.” And with that, I became stressed because I had failed to plan.

They say, “If you fail to plan, then you better plan to fail.” For me, and for my “Blogging World,” I believe the same holds some truth. Here are the new “Blogging Rules” I approach:

Blog Post Calendar Example in Google Documents

Rule 1: As I just mentioned, preparation and planning. Layout on a calendar the days you will put up a Blog Post. Try to layout the content for each day, even a month in advance. If you can’t do that, at least highlight on the days that a post will go live.

Rule 2: Keep it consistent. Don’t make your readers “guess” when you might post. This may turn them off from “wasting time” checking in with your Blog. My new Consistency Calendar has me posting to my Blog on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. You will notice that with the yellow highlights on the calendar the left.

Rule 3: Easy-Access Calendar. Make sure you have an easy-access calendar. For me, I use 2 “main” calendars. I use my iCal for some things and my Google Calendar for everything else (mostly shared items and social media “planning.”) The Google Calendar is the perfect solution to nailing down your frequency and strategy. I can open it up from anywhere and at anytime. On the left-hand side, I will insert a few extra columns before the actual calendar as a place for “Post Idea Generation.” Having this visible at all times keeps it top-of-mind and very easy to manage.

Rule 4: “Themed” Days. It’s not necessarily that the days I have planned to post all have “themes,” but once I became consistent with my “Top Follow Friday” Post, the rest just fell into place. My Fridays, each and every Friday, were accounted for. I then decided to add Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Tuesday because I once read from Lorelle on WordPress that Tuesday is a good day for higher traffic. Thursday doesn’t really have a reason, other than that I wanted one more weekday to post. And Sunday, because I am starting The Sunday Sauce. Those posts will begin this upcoming Sunday and continue on.

Children Playing Hide and Seek

To be successful with your Blogging efforts, it’s not truly about any of the “rules” I’ve just stated. The bottom line is that going to your site, reading your material and engaging with you should be easy for your viewers. Don’t make them play a game of hide-and-go-seek where they constantly have to wonder which days you’ll be hiding and which ones you’ve come out to play. And by making it easy for them, you will ultimately create easy for you!
