Beware: Reference Checks Better than Ever

At the #CaribouChat13 Meetup, Keith Privette stated, “Do you even have to call anyone for a reference anymore?”

My short answer: No.

My 2 Reasons Why:

  1. There are so many “legal” issues today around references. Human Resources is very cautious with the information they will provide. Most companies leave it at confirmation of dates employed and a simple yes or no to the question, “Eligible for rehire?” I used to be a recruiter for Robert Half International, where I had to constantly call on references. Even 3 years ago this was typically all the information you could get. Unless that is the kind of reference you need, it’s nearly non-beneficial information to determine “character.”
  2. Today there are a multitude of ways to “find out” about someone. Google paved the way. This is also the “catch 22″ for those trying to land a job. Companies can “Google” anyone (and yes, your partying days and crazy ways may come back to haunt you). There is so much information via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace, personal blogs and more. Not always will this yield in “character” information, but the chances are much greater than via traditional reference checking.
